Why did you become a lawyer?

After graduating from college, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I spent a year waiting tables, and then I landed a job working as a paralegal for Larry Pozner. At the time, I didn’t realize that by watching one of the greatest defense attorneys practice law, I was discovering my own path. Larry gave me access to the courtroom, to client meetings, and to strategy sessions, and I had the opportunity to watch him try cases. What struck me most was how powerful a lawyer can be in giving a voice to the voiceless and how strong advocacy can have the potential to change lives. Shortly thereafter, I went to law school with a clear goal: to pursue criminal defense work.

What do you think is the most essential professional skill?

Empathy. Empathy improves leadership, collaboration, and communication with clients and colleagues. It makes meaningful connection with others possible, which leads to better engagement with clients, more creativity and innovation, and, of course, better results. Empathy guides me in everything that I do.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

In this profession, lawyers can wield so much power, and there’s a risk that this power can go to our heads. A great piece of advice I was once given is to focus on serving your clients’ needs rather than your own ego. This job is never about us. The best way to practice is with integrity. We should strive to always be the most prepared lawyer in the room, and we should always treat everyone, including our adversaries, with respect and professionalism.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Blue Bell ice cream, any flavor.

Do you have a favorite type of exercise?

The vertical climber.

What’s your favorite place to escape to in Colorado?

Marble. My parents have a cabin on the quarry road. We used to spend weeks at a time up there during the summers. It’s a beautiful and tranquil part of the state.

Who’s your favorite writer and why?

Erik Larson. He makes history read like a novel.

Where do you go when you need fresh inspiration?

I love to get away to the beach. Disconnecting and unplugging to recharge always helps me to return to work ready to fight for the rights of the accused.

If you had a warning label, what would it say?

Warning: no topic is off limits! I’ve heard a lot of things over the years, and it has been a long time since I’ve been shocked.

Who knows you best?

My husband is also my law partner, so we spend quite a lot of time together. At this point he knows (almost) everything about me.
