People v. Rodriguez-Morelos.
2025 CO 2. No. 22SC982. Identity Theft—Statutory Interpretation.
January 21, 2025
In this case, the supreme court considered whether the use of a nonprofit organization’s name and tax-exempt document constitutes the use of personal identifying information under Colorado’s identity-theft statute, CRS § 18-5-902(1)(a). The court concluded that, although other parts of the identity-theft statute protect organizations, the provision of Colorado’s identity-theft statute that references personal identifying information applies only to information concerning single, identified human beings.
